Ellison in Newsweek, 11.14.09

"They may also be responding to relentless anti-Obama rhetoric with a racist subtext. 'Republican operatives are trying to inflame the tension that has always been there between black men and white women,' says Charles Ellison, senior fellow at the Center for New Politics and Policy. Calling Obama a radical socialist is one example. 'That raises the image of the angry black activist, which frightens some people,' he says. 'That is just going to be the reality for this White House.'"

Ellison in BlackAmericaWeb.com, 10.29.09

Charles Ellison, author and director of the Center for New Politics and Policy, said Deeds has bigger problems. “Deeds' inability to energize black voters in Virginia is the real problem, even though he may tighten the race on Tuesday with a strong showing in solidly left-leaning Northern Virginia,” Ellison told BlackAmericaWeb.com. “Still, in a state where over a quarter of the voters are African-American, Deeds has done a sour job at outreach. By all appearances, he's all but discounted the critical need for that base,” Ellison said. “The interesting thing, however,” Ellison added, “has been the very strong support for McDonnell from Sheila Johnson, which could yield dividends for the black business and less-partisan political establishment in the state.”

But Charles Ellison, author and director of the Center for New Politics and Policy, said Norwood's ascendancy as front-runner in Atlanta's mayoral race is no accident. “It's typical, and it is rooted in a number of factors impacting most urban centers with large black populations,” Ellison told BlackAmericaWeb.com. “It's the for-better-or-for-worse consequence of gentrification, of low-income to working class- black neighborhoods rapidly disappearing in a wave of real estate bum rushes by mostly white urban professionals,” he said. Meanwhile, Ellison said the new political dynamic in Atlanta is evidence of the inability of the African-American political establishment to rally around one strong black candidate. “It’s sign of the evolving and diverse political attitudes of African-Americans in the 21st century, where black voters are more open to picking candidates based on perceived qualifications than race,” Ellison said. “It's not about how black you are. It's about 'What can you do for me?'” he added. “The successful candidates are those who are able to build multi-racial, multi-ethnic or multi-group coalitions."

Ellison in BlackAmericaWeb.com, 10.23.09

"'The unfortunate reality regarding the surge in death threats faced by President Obama is that we somehow expected that,' Ellison told BlackAmericaWeb.com. 'It is a result of a... country adjusting to its first black president and the inability of certain segments of the population to accept it,' he said. Ellison said the increase in hate groups targeting Obama could escalate. 'A 400 percent increase in death threats is of great concern, as that's compounded by the chalkboard scratching tone of polarizing racial and ideological posturing from the right,' Ellison said. 'Even more disturbing are reports that the Secret Service is stretched thin, with plans to cut back or somehow downsize presidential protection.'"

Ellison in The Arena @ POLITICO, 9.9.09

Sophisticated, yet scrappy. Accommodating on some fronts, yet bullish and defiant on others. A staging of political save-the-best-for-last. One can't help but be impressed by careful insertion of cadence and the slight hint of 'call-and-response.' The speech itself, in terms of delivery, and the response of the Joint Session was clearly political theater on a grand scale.

From the enraptured and taunting cheers of Democrats to the disrespectful glares, standing protests and uncivil howls of 'it's a lie' from certain Republicans, this speech put the game on full display. As far as presentation and rhetorical skill, it contained an edge that could revive some energy to his left while stoking slight reservation or caution to his right. It should be noted that, up until this point, the President never really presented his own plan. He had, all along, allowed the molding of a plan by the Congress, offering the opportunity for competing perspectives to craft it. This speech is the culmination of an entire summer's unrest, a collage and rather complex mix of ideas collected over months of deliberation.

"Congress will be yearning for clear, plain-spoken definition and direction on health care reform - the American public will want that, too,” Charles D. Ellison, director of the Center for New Politics and Policy, told BlackAmericaWeb.com Tuesday. “He will need to perform a dramatic rhetorical pivot if he is to generate stronger support.”
